Hebel is quoted supplied and installed per square metre of wall area, and render is almost always a separate line because it is a separate trade with its own rate. Installed Hebel generally costs more per square metre than fibre cement cladding and less than a full brick veneer wall once you account for the footing brick requires. What moves the number most is panel thickness, the height you are working at, and access, since panels are heavy and awkward and a site you cannot get a lift onto costs more in labour. We give you the panel and install cost, the jointing and surface prep, and the render as three separate lines so you can see where the money actually goes.

Hebel goes up faster than brick, which is one of the main reasons people choose it. A single boundary wall on a standard suburban block is usually installed in two to four days. A full elevation on a two-storey extension typically takes one to two weeks depending on access and how much cutting the design requires. Render and its cure time come after that and add a week or more. The speed advantage is real but it is at the install stage, so do not let anyone quote you a whole-of-wall timeline that quietly leaves out the render.

Hebel is a proprietary system and it performs the way it is meant to only when it is installed to the manufacturer's specification, which covers fixing centres, adhesive type, jointing and the surface preparation before render. Plenty of trades will have a go at it. We start by checking the supporting structure, because Hebel is heavy and the framing or slab edge underneath it has to be right before a panel goes anywhere. Panels are then set out to minimise cuts, lifted into place, and fixed and adhered to the manufacturer's specification, with joints filled and finished as we go rather than left for the renderer to sort out. Cuts around windows, doors and services are made with the correct tooling so the edges hold rather than crumbling. Once the wall is up we prepare the surface for render and hand it over in a state the renderer can actually work with. Off-cuts and dust are cleaned up daily, because Hebel dust travels.

Cracking almost always traces back to the joints rather than the panels. The usual causes are the wrong adhesive, joints that were not fully filled, panels that were forced into position instead of being set out to fit, and render applied over a surface that was not properly prepared or was still green. Movement in the supporting structure will do it too, which is why we check what is underneath before we start. Done properly, jointing is the slowest part of the install and that is exactly as it should be. If you have existing Hebel that is cracking, we can assess whether it is a surface issue or structural movement, and those need very different fixes.

Hebel earns its place where you need thermal and acoustic performance in a thin wall, and where speed matters. That makes it strong on boundary walls, on infill sites where you are close to a neighbour, and where a fire rating is required. Brick veneer is cheaper per square metre in material terms, looks like brick because it is, and is the conventional choice, but it needs a footing, it is slower, and it eats more of your block. Fibre cement is the lightest and cheapest option and is right for a straightforward re-clad, but it gives you nothing on acoustics or thermal mass. If your driver is a quiet, warm wall close to a boundary, Hebel is usually the answer. If it is budget on a simple re-clad, it is not.
